TalkBuffaloSports.com's Weekly Update! 12/2/08

Come visit TalkBuffaloSports.com! Join us in everything Buffalo sports!

We trust that everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving weekend!

We would like to take a moment to recognize the passing of Ted Rogers, the media mogul who lured the Buffalo Bills to Toronto. Say what you will about the Bills moving to Toronto and it being a horrific thing - with Rogers help, the bottom line of the Bills for the next 5 years is looking pretty good...which goes a long way to help keep a small market team like Buffalo stay afloat in the money hungry NFL.

For that Ted, we are grateful for your help and for getting Canadian interest in our football team. Rest in Peace.

News of the Week:
  • The Buffalo Bills try to shake off an uninspired performance that they had in the loss to the San Francisco 49'ers this past weekend. Trent Edwards is day to day with a groin pull. Next up is a big divisional game against the rival Miami Dolphins this Sunday in Toronto at the Rogers Centre. Let's hope our Canadian brethren can show how Buffalo brings the noise.

  • The Buffalo Sabres started off strong this past holiday weekend with coming off of back to back wins against Boston (Wednesday night) and Pittsburgh (Friday night). It seemed like the Sabres ran out of gas in the third period in the loss to Montreal on Saturday and forgot to refuel as they fell again to Nashville last night. Nashville came away with the 2-0 win and shutout in Buffalo's barn.

  • The Sabres better find a way to refuel as they are staring down the barrel of 6 games in the next 10 days and are beginning to fall further in the standings. Buffalo caps off the end of the week in the sunshine state as they take on the Florida Panthers (9-11-3) on Thursday and Tampa Bay Lightning (6-10-7) on Saturday...both are 7:30 starts.

  • Congrats go out to Sweet Home and Orchard Park high school football teams:
  1. On Saturday, Sweet Home jumped to a 28-7 lead and held on to win its first state title by beating Section II (Albany area) champion Burnt Hills, 35-28, in the A final.
  2. Orchard Park finished off Section VI’s four-for-four state championship performance at the Carrier Dome with a come-from- behind, 21-17, victory over Section IX (Orange County) Monroe-Woodbury.

  • The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (3-2) erased a 12-point second-half deficit to defeat Temple, 83-73, at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. Five Bulls scored in double-figures, led by Calvin Betts who scored a career-high 18 points. The Bulls will next host second-ranked Connecticut at Alumni Arena on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.

  • Behind a total team effort, the Niagara men's basketball team (5-1) was crowned champions of the 2008 Philly Hoop Group Classic Liberty Bracket with a 103-63 victory over Hartford (2-5) on Saturday afternoon. Four Purple Eagles were named to the five-man All-Tournament Team, capped by Tournament MVP Tyrone Lewis.

  • The University at Buffalo Bulls women's basketball Redshirt sophomore Kourtney Brown added some more accolades as she was named the MAC East Co-Player of the Week. Brown, who leads the Bulls in scoring, is coming off another solid week where she was named to the all-tournament team of the Lady Pirate Invitational.
